What is a balance bike?

A balance bike is a pedal-free bicycle designed to teach very young children the basics of balance and coordination necessary to ride a bike. Unlike a kid’s bike fitted with stabilisers, a balance bike helps kids from around 2 years old develop their own sense of equilibrium. And unlike bikes fitted with stabilisers, the rider is able to tackle much more challenging terrain - you only have to see a child wobbling over slightly uneven ground to know that two wheels and feet are far more stable than two wheels and two much smaller, much less functional wheels.

What’s the difference between a wooden and aluminium balance bike?

Performance-wise, there’s little difference between a wood and aluminium balance bike as both materials allow young children to safely develop their riding skills. Both materials are lightweight, weatherproof and robust.

At Early Rider, you’ll find the primary differences lie in size (minimum standover height) and componentry.

Our wooden balance bikes have the smallest standover height, catering to children with a starting inside leg measurement of 30cm. Both The Charger and The Big Foot, our aluminium bikes start with a standover height of 33cm. We’ve built plenty of size adjustability into all of our balance bikes ensuring kids age 2-4 have more than enough room to grow.

With 5 balance bikes in the range, we’ve developed a range of bikes to accommodate any terrain from tarmac and packed dirt to roots and rocks.
